‘Crop Seminar’ organised in Kurseong Kurseong, 15 Dec 2014: Hundreds of farmers thronged the ‘Crop Seminar’ which was jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, and Doordarshan Kendra, Kolkata, at the Ambootia playground on Monday. The main objective of the programme was to create awareness among farmers on successful and sustainable farming through the use of modern technologies and scientific methods. Experts on fishery, horticulture, bee-keeping and animal resource, and representatives of different departments from different places in Darjeeling Hills participated in the programme. GTA Sabha executive member cum in-charge of the agriculture department, Kalyan Dewan was the chief guest of the programme, which was attended by local GTA Sabha member Pranay Thapa, and Kurseong MLA Rohit Sharma along with farmers and officials of the agriculture department of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), including Deputy Director of Agriculture (Administration), GTA, Md Amanullah, and Assistant Director of Agriculture (Administration). Various speakers emphasized on the different aspects of farming, while a ‘technical session’ was held, where experts and farmers interacted with each other. “Agriculture is neglected and discriminated by the people these days. While our ancestors used to farm on dry barren lands, we have failed to reap harvests from very fertile land these days. There is this mindset that farming is only for illiterate persons,” said the chief guest during his speech.Dewan said farming can be done in very small plots of land with the use of modern technologies and scientific methods.Speaking to reporters after the programme, Dewan said several measures have been taken up by the governments as well as the GTA for the uplift of the agriculture sector in Darjeeling Hills. “But to implement the plans, we must come forward collectively,” he added.
