Croton. Excerpt from my book: Croton, which sounds like a planet, is actually a small village forty miles west of Manhattan, as the crow flies. Situated along the banks of the Hudson River, the village of 7,000, was a close knit community where everyone came together for Saturday football games. Enthusiastic townsfolk braved the crisp autumn breeze blowing the brown, orange, and yellow leaves across the field. On Saturday morning the village sprung to life in anticipation of the game. Crotonites bundled in fleece and down jackets, carrying coffee in Styrofoam cups, as they marched across the field to the stands. Directly across the street from the high school, ghosts of Croton’s past lay side by side in the Bethel Chapel and its cemetery. Some had been close friends while others were soldiers from the Revolutionary War. The wood clapboard structure housed one of America’s oldest organs, which dates to 1840.
