Cruelty or ignorance? This beautiful Dutch is Marilyn. She was abandoned in Eisenhower Park and rescued by the Town of Hempstead animal shelter who asked us to take her. Domestic rabbits being abandoned in parks is a daily occurrence here on Long Island, but whats particularly egregious about Marilyns case is that she has blatantly obvious cataracts in both eyes and is therefore completely blind. Look at her eyes: opaque white pupils. BOTH eyes! Can you imagine? A blind pet rabbit set free in a huge park full of raccoons and hawks. It is a miracle the shelter got her before something else did. Despite her blindness she is EXTREMELY affectionate and hangs her head out her condo door, craning to get more pats and kisses. Will stop eating her banana treat to get some head rubs. Its impossible for me to give her enough attention with all the other fosters here so we are most grateful to Katie D. who will start fostering Marilyn tomorrow. More good news: Cataracts are sometimes surgically correctible! Marilyn will have a check up at Catnip & Carrots and possibly be referred to a vet ophthalmologist. We are hoping she is a candidate for corrective surgery, and we would then be asking for donations to help offset the cost. Please stay tuned!
