Cruised to the small island of Gramvousa off north western Crete. Fittingly for Pirate Dave, Gramvousa was a pirate stronghold during the Greek War of Independence. In 1825 about 300 - 400 Cretans who had been fighting in the Peloponnese returned to Crete disguised as Turks and took the fort on the island which became their base. They were besieged on the island for two years and during this time became pirates attacking Turkish, Egyptian and European shipping in the area. Eventually the Governor of Greece got really fed up with the pesky pirates and sent British and French ships in to deal with them which resulted in the destruction of all the pirate ships and the fort coming under British rule. Sad really... I love a good pirate story.. though I doubt they were like Captain Jack Sparrow and his crew! There is a beautiful lagoon called Baros Lagoon which sits between the island and the mainland - really shallow warm clear water.. just lovely.
