Cryptolocker...Its making rounds again. This is a menacing bit of software known as a Ransomware Trojan that is usually spread through infected email attachments from seemingly legitimate organizations. Once activated, the program encrypts certain files on your hard drive, such as pictures and documents. If a user is in a work environment with access to network drives, the infection can spread to other drives on the network. Once the files are encrypted, the program informs the user that their files have been encrypted, and that the user can purchase a key to decrypt their files, per instructions shown on your screen. We have seen another wave of this in recent weeks. Its NOT fun. Here are some things you can do to protect yourself: - Keep your Windows Operating System up to date via Windows Updates. - Keep your Security Software up-to-date and scan your system regularly. - DO NOT open attachments from emails whose senders you do not recognize, or from legitimate senders whose message is suspicious. - Back up your data, preferably to a device that does not stay connected to your computer: portable hard drive, flash drive, etc. You may even want to consider cloud/offsite backup. - If you DO get infected, disconnect from the network/Internet immediately and get help (Call us). - DO NOT pay the ransom.
