Cuban National Series #54 - The Schedule ... Recently a number - TopicsExpress

Cuban National Series #54 - The Schedule ... Recently a number of people have emailed me with questions concerning the schedule for the upcoming National Series #54. (How long will the season be? When will it end? Will there be two rounds again this winter?). At this point we have only seen the announcement that the season will start on September 21. The Commission has released no other information, so all we can do at this point is speculate. My own strong suspicion is that the entire season will be played between September 21 and January 30, including the championship playoffs. One obvious reason for this would be to finish before the Caribbean Series in San Juan and thus not have to split the season in two (as was done the last two years). But there may also be another motive here. It is my guess that the Commission is planning to send as many as 20-25 top players to Japan next spring to play in the Japanese Central League and Pacific League. It may well be that the Federation has realized this is the best plan 1) prepare the national team for future tournaments, 2) to earn much needed cash to fund Cuban baseball operations in a worsening economy, and 3) to allow many of the better players to earn salaries while remaining loyal to the league at home and returning to play in future National Series. Ending the season before the Caribbean Series will allow the Cuba players to be assigned to Japanese teams in March for spring training and not halfway through the season as was the case this year. But if the season does end by January 30 we then have another interesting question. Will the Cuban representative in San Juan during the first week of February be the SN#53 champion (Pinar del Río) or the new SN#54 champion?
