Cuello vows to make most of title shot MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxer Denver Cuello is determined to return to the Philippines with the World Boxing Council (WBC) minimumweight championship after waiting nearly three years to get a shot at the title. Cuello will challenge Chinese champion Xiong Zhao Zhong for the belt on June 28 at the World Trade Center in Dubai, and the 26-year-old Filipino told Sport 360 that he is ready for the fight. “I am 100% ready, mentally and physically, for this fight,” Cuello told Jon Turner. “I have been waiting a long time for a shot at the world title – around three years – and I feel now is my time.” “Training has gone really well. I feel great,” he added. But Cuello also knows that Zhong, whom he called “a great boxer,” will not give up his belt easily, especially as he will be watched by millions of his countrymen in China. “He will be a hard opponent,” Cuello said. “It promises to be a great fight for everyone watching.” “But I’m confident I will be the next champion,” he stressed. Cuello is also happy to be fighting in Dubai, especially as he feels the support of his fellow Filipinos in the area. “It’s great being here. It feels like a home away from home, as there are so many fellow Filipinos here, and the climate is very similar,” he said. “I really want to win the fight on June 28 for both me and my country,” he added. Cuello holds a record of 33 wins with four losses and six draws. He holds a 12-fight winning streak dating back to July 2010. Meanwhile, Zhong has a record of 20-4-1, and won the title by beating Javier Martinez in China last November 2012.
