Cultism: Police raid Ogun lawmaker’s house -Over brother’s alleged involvement Written by Olayinka Olukoya -Abeokuta Monday, 12 August 2013 00:00 THE Omu Ijebu country home of a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly (names withheld), was, at the weekend, raided by men of the state police command. Nigerian Tribune learnt that the police, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Muhammad Abdulkadir, was said to be after the younger brother of the lawmaker, in connection with alleged cultism activities. It will be recalled that cultism activities had become rampant in the Ijebu axis of the state, in recent times, which had led to the arrest of 26 suspected cultists, last weekend. The lawmaker’s brother was said to have escaped through the back door when the detachment of police invaded the house. Confirming the arrest of some members of different cult groups, the state Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi, said the arrest was part of the command’s effort to rid the state of any cultism activities. “Yes, the operation was part of the war against cultism in Ijebu and Remo axis of Ogun State and it was led by the DCP Operations, Muhammad Abdulkadir to black spots and hideouts of the cultists. “We did the job operationally, no sentiment, nobody should politicise the operation. We are not interested in the owners of the houses raided and there is no house we visited without an intelligent report on either one or two occupants of the house,” the police spokesman said. He, however, said those in police net would be screened to determine their level of involvement, while innocent ones would be released. Effort to get the reaction of the lawmaker failed, as call put through to his mobile line was not picked, at the time of filing this report. However, a close ally of the lawmaker said the action of the police had political undertone. The ally, who preferred anonymity, fingered a top government office holder as the brain behind the action. “I know why his brother is the target of the police. The move to arrest him is politically motivated and nothing else,” the lawmaker’s ally said.
