Curatorial position with the US Marshals Museum - application open until filled; described as ideal for a curator with some experience who wants to develop a new department JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Curator Supervisor: Vice-President, Operations Classification: Exempt Date Prepared: May 2013 WORK SUMMARY: The curator serves as the primary researcher and historian for the U.S. Marshals Museum. This position is responsible for the care and management of the U.S. Marshals Museum collection. Designs and maintains collection storage that meets all professional needs. This is an opportunity to build a new collection. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Leads the care and management of collections; insure the collections procedures are followed as outlined in the Collections Policy and Collections Plan; 2. Assists with the management of the exhibit planning committees and guide the content of exhibits; 3. Coordinates exhibit research and ensures historical accuracy; 4. Adheres to professional standards and codes of ethics; 5. Reports on a regular basis to the Collections Committee with recommendations of policy changes and the accessioning/de-accessioning of objects; 6. Serves as a leader in the community – nurturing partnerships that support exhibitions and programs; 7. Participates in and, at times leads, strategic projects for the museum; 8. Provides research for and support programs in all areas of the museum; 9. Supervises collections staff and volunteers; 10. Serves as a member of the museum’s senior management team; works to support the strategic direction of the museum through participation in regularly scheduled Administration meetings; 11. Coordinates recovery efforts in case of a disaster and is responsible for staff disaster training. QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in History or related field; Public History or Museum Studies preferred Minimum of five years curatorial experience in a museum setting – history preferred Experience in a supervisory capacity Prior hands-on experience managing collections Must have advanced computer skills and be knowledgeable about Windows based programs including Microsoft Office SKILLS: Must be able to maintain confidentiality Ability to work in a fast-paced environment Ability to work in a group setting Team-oriented perspective Excellent communication skills Progressive, innovative attitude with an ability to explore and pursue fresh, unconventional approaches Ability to work independently with limited supervision Send application to: Jessica Hayes Vice-President, Museum Operations jhayes@usmarshalsmuseum
