Curfew in parts of Kashmir after army kills two civilians The Jammu and Kashmir government Tuesday imposed a stringent curfew in most parts of states summer capital Srinagar after Indian army killed two civilians and injured two others in Budgam district on Monday. In Srinagars Old City, paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force and Police patrolled the streets and roads from early morning. Witnesses from Nowhatta and adjoining areas said that they were not allowed to move out of their houses to buy essentials in the morning. The main roads in the capital city have been blocked with spools of concertina wire. Forces were not allowing movement of people on the Nala Mar road, Mushtaq Ahmad, a banker from Bohri Kadal, said. Restrictions have also been imposed in areas falling under Batmaloo police station. A senior police officer told Kashmir Dispatch that the curfew has been imposed after the killings in Chattergam and also owing to the Ashura-- the tenth day of the Muharram. All the entry points leading to the city center Lal Chowk were sealed and civilian movement was stopped in areas of Dalgate, Maisuma and Shaheed Gunj from where the annual procession was scheduled to pass. The police had laid concertina wires and barricades at several places in old city area and Amira Kadal, TRC Crossing, Dalgate, Karanagar, Jahangir Chowk, Budshah Chowk and Footbridge to prevent the civilian movement. The troopers of armys 53 Rashtriya Rifles while trying to stop a vehicle during a checking at the main market in Chattergam last evening had shot at the car after it allegedly didnt stop. In the incident, four persons who were travelling in the car sustained critical bullet injuries and two died before reaching hospital. All the injured were taken to army’s 92 base hospital here in Srinagar for treatment. But Faizal Mohammad (26) and Mehraj-ud-Din Dar (27) residents of Nowgam were pronounced dead on arrival. While the two injured Shakir Ahmad Bhat (30) and Zahid Ahmad Naqash (25) of Nowgam have been operated by the doctors at the army hospital. A strict curfew is in place in Nowgam where an uneasy calm prevails. Stone-pelting clashes also broke out at Nowgam and its adjoining area, reports said on Monday, adding that forces used tear gas shells and opened few shots in air to disperse the protesting youth. Restrictions were also imposed in Chattergam where stone hurling clashes had erupted after Monday killings. Authorities have also imposed curfew in areas falling under police station Pantha Chowk. The army has said that they were probing the incident while the police have filed a case against the army.
