Curious about toileting in the 1880s? Well, keep in mind that this is the home of a wealthy businessman who custom-built his house using the latest cutting-edge technology of the day, so what was their bathroom like? Well, the first photo shows David in the main bathroom in the upstairs bedchambers area used by the family. You see the sink on the right, and just to the left out of view is the tub. And the bench David is sitting on is actually the toilet, with its lid down. It is wider (built for two?) than the toilet downstairs (the second photo) which is in a little powder room (consisting of the toilet and a small sink) under the main stairway. This was a vast improvement in a time when most houses did not have indoor plumbing and toilets were in outhouses. The maintenance of the fine woods would be a nightmare, but of course the wealthy had live-in servants to do that.
