Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl who survived an assassination attempt by a Taliban gunman last year, has been named as the recipient of Amnesty International’s highest award. She will receive Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience Award along with American singer and human rights activist Harry Belafonte at ceremony Tuesday evening in Dublin, Ireland. 2. China opens the world’s highest airport in Daocheng. Yading airport in Daocheng county of Garzi Tibetan autonomous region of China stands at 4,411 metre above sea level. It pipped the Qamdo Bangda airport, which has an altitude of 4,334 metre, to become the highest airport in the world after its inauguration yesterday. 3. Google acquires popular smartphone apps “Bump” which is used to share smartphone files like contacts, pictures or other data. Bump Technologies co-founder and chief David Lieb did not disclose terms and value of the deal. The app, launched more than four years ago, was downloaded 125 million times as of now. 4. Chinese FDI was increased marginally by 0.62% in August to USD 8.38 billion compared to same month last year. The increase was down sharply from a 24.13% jump in July and 20.12% jump in June. In the first eight months of the year, China has received total FDI of USD 79.77 billion, up 6.37% from the same period last year. 5. Global mining giant Vedanta Resources has appointed Tom Albanese, former Chief Executive of Rio Tinto, as chairman of its subsidiary Vedanta Resources Holdings Ltd. In this role, he will be actively involved in continuing to develop the company’s strategy, policies and growth objectives, as per Vedanta. He had stepped down as the Chief Executive of the British-Australian Rio Tinto over a USD 14 billion write down by the mining giant in January owing to some bad deals.
