India becomes the first country in South Asia to ban the testing of cosmetics and its ingredients on animals. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh inaugurated National Waqf Development Corporation Limited (NAWADCO) with an authorized share capital of Rs.500 Crore on Sachar committees recommendation on 29 January 2014. It is a new Central Public Sector Enterprise in New Delhi and will be under the Ministry of Minority Affairs. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Olympics, CWG and Asian Games medal winners will get tax exemption on cash or other rewards given by the government. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. 70% of Diesel, 99.6 % of Petrol is consumed in the country by the Transport Sector alone as per an all India study conducted by M/s Nielsen (India) for Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of Petroleum Ministry. I. Two-wheelers top Petrol consumption with 61.42% followed by cars with 34.33% and 3-wheelers with 2.34%. II. Diesel consumption: 13.15% by private cars and UVs, 8.94% by commercial cars & UVs and 6.39% by 3-wheelers. II. Trucks account for 28.25%, Buses 9.55% and Railways about 3.24% of the total diesel consumption in India. IV. Agriculture Sector uses 13% of Diesel; industry consumes 9.02% including industry gensets with 4.06% and Mobile Towers 1.54%. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Second supermoon of 2014 will be visible on Friday : The second of the five supermoons of 2014 would be visible on Friday, an organization working for popularizing astronomy said here Tuesday.Space Foundation said the first supermoon of 2014 appeared Jan 1 – making January the single calendar month with two supermoons until January 2018.Friday’s supermoon would be visible around 3.30 p.m.The remaining three supermoons will be visible July 12, Aug 10 and Sep 9. The one in August would be closest to Earth. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the National Rural Livelihoods Mission under the Union Ministry of Rural Development and Digital Green — a Microsoft Research Project yesterday. The MoU was signed to exchange the relevant livelihood practices among rural communities under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. The Reserve Bank of India, in consultation with the Government, has decided to enhance the existing sub-limit of USD 5 billion available to long term investors – sovereign wealth funds, multilateral agencies, pension/ insurance/ endowment funds and foreign central banks – registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India for investment in Government dated securities to USD 10 billion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. FDI flows into India jumped by 17% to USD 28 billion in 2013 as per the latest United Nations report published today. It also said foreign direct investment across the world rose to levels not seen since the start of the global economic crisis in 2008. India was ranked 16th among the top 20 global economies receiving the most FDI.
