Current situation of Karate and the OLYMPICS OK, without - TopicsExpress

Current situation of Karate and the OLYMPICS OK, without getting into a discussion of the merits, this is the scenario as I understand it. Last month a working committee at the IOC came up with 40 recommendations to change the Olympics. The proposal relevant to karate is recommendation 10 Move from a sport-based to an event-based programme with regular reviews of the programme to be based on events rather than sports, with the involvement of the International Federations, and with the following restrictions to be respected: • For the Games of the Olympiad: approximately 10,500 athletes, 5,000 accredited coaches and athletes’ support personnel, and 310 events. The IOC Session to decide on the inclusion of any sport (IF) in the programme. The IOC to allow the OCOGs to make a proposal for the inclusion of one or more additional events on the Olympic programme for that edition of the Olympic Games. This has both positive and negative implications for Karate -ve) Event based is bad for us. We have too many divisions and including full contact as has been discussed would mean even more. Antonio Espinos (WKF president) has acknowledged and stated that there may need to be changes to karates proposal and that an open weight division may be the way to go. +ve) On the positive side Recommendation 10 allows for the Organizing Games Committee to make recommendations about including additional events. I believe Japans 1st recommendation would be baseball/softball but if there were still events available then karate would have a shot. The 40 recommendations will go before the IOC membership 8/9 Dec That is my understanding of the current state of play.
