Custom House Studios are pleased to present Stations of the Cross, drawings by Evie Hone, from the Irish American Cultural Institute’s O Malley Collection of 20th Centenary Irish Art at the University of Limerick November 6- December 7th 2014. The exhibition will be opened with guests speakers Rev. Val Rogers, Holy Trinity Church Westport, Art Historian Hilary Pyle, on Thursday November 13th at 7.30 pm, at the Custom House Studios Gallery, Westport Quay. Co Mayo. Exhibition runs every until December 7th 2014. Artist, Evie Hone was born in Dublin in 1894 and is credited as one of the founders of the modern Art movement in Ireland. Her style evolved from Cubism to Expressionism in the 1930s when she began to explore themes of a religious nature. Tis e exhibition features 14 black and white sketches depicting the Stations of the Cross. These works were the initial drawings for the finished oil works on canvas commissioned for Kiltullagh church, Co. Galway. Also included are 6 other works on paper, Near Lough Mack 1945, watercolour and crayon on paper / Landscape 1941, gouache on paper, / Study for stained glass religious window. gouache on card on paper / St. Columba 1943, ink on paper, / Christ on the Cross c1940, ink and wash on paper, and The Deposition 1940, gouache and watercolour on paper, 29.7 x 56.4 cm. These works are on loan from the Helen Hooker O ‘Malley Collection, now owned by Irish American Cultural Institute and kept at the University of Limerick. The collection was put together by Helen Hooker and Ernie O Malley while they lived at Burrishoole Lodge near Newport. Evie Hone was a good friend of Helen nad ernie and visited them often at their home in Burrrishoole and in Achill.
