Cut and Pasting the email from Steve Langdon received today. Hi - TopicsExpress

Cut and Pasting the email from Steve Langdon received today. Hi all It has been suggested that Enterprise Inns will be retaining the freehold on the Maiden Over whilst giving Tesco a 25 year free of tie lease. If this is correct, it seems unlikely that Tesco would be planning to continue running the site as a pub. I am aware of two meetings that are planned for this week: This evening (Monday 28th July) at 8pm in the Eldon - to discuss the current spate of local pub closures and what can be done. This was originally to focus on the situation re the Eldon and surrounding pubs but will include discussion of the Maiden Over. Wednesday July 30th at 7.30pm in the Maiden Over - to discuss what to do next. There are two things that can be done at this stage: Firstly, the Maiden Over has been nominated by CAMRA as an Asset of Community Value. If this nomination is successful, it would give the community time to raise funds to bid for the property should it be sold on the open market. Comments from residents regarding this nomination can be submitted to Mark Redfearn at Wokingham Borough Council, either in writing or via the online form at wokingham.gov.uk/services/contacts/ (please mark clearly as re: Maiden Over). Secondly, residents can request that Wokingham Borough Council issue an Article 4 Direction on the Maiden Over, preventing change of its use without planning consent (without this article being issued, use could be changed from pub to shop without the need to obtain planning permission). My understanding is that in order for such a request to be taken seriously, it would need to focus on the detrimental impacts that losing the pub would have, e.g. loss of a community facility, social cohesion etc, rather than being based on a case against a new Tesco. In addition to residents writing in individually, it may be helpful to try to start petitions on one or both of these issues. I anticipate that this will be discussed on Wednesday. If anyone is unable to attend on Wednesday but would be keen to help with this (e.g. knocking on doors in a particular street), please let me know. Thanks Steve
