Cut-offs go higher for 5-year LLB course After a long wait, over 400 candidates seeking admission to BA/BCom LLB (honours) five-year integrated course at the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) visited Panjab University for counselling and interview on Monday. The UILS counselling was earlier called off due to a case in the Punjab and Haryana high court. The revised merit list according to the HC ruling, which says BCom students should be given weightage in the LLB course too, was declared on August 2. With the cut-offs being higher than the last year, many candidates had to return disappointed. Admission to BCom LLB (honours) course closed at 87% in general category and at 78% for BA LLB (honours). Last year, the cut-off for BCom LLB (hons) was 72%, while that for BA LLB (hons) was 70%. "Weightage to BCom students has taken the cut-off higher," said Chanchal Narang, assistant professor at the department. The merit list is prepared on the basis of entrance test and Class XII marks. Number of seats in BCom LLB (honours) for general candidates is 33 (of 60), while it is 67 (of 120) in BA LLB (honours). Kriti Bhatia from Himachal Pradesh, a candidate for BCom LLB (hons) course, said she was attending the BA LLB (honours) counselling as a second option. "If I do not get admission in it too, then I will opt for a private college," she said. Anticipating high cut-offs, most had come with a back-up plan too. Kavya Seth and Sabia Dhillon, who were at PU for the counseling, have already taken admission in another college. "We are waiting for our turn. We have no idea about the second round of counselling. If we do not get admission here, then we will purse BCom from elsewhere," said Kavya.
