Manthei will trace Welk’s life and times and the impact he had on the popularity of the accordion and its music. Although Welk is mostly known for appealing to more mature audiences, he and his orchestra enjoyed success in the pop world as well. “Calcutta,” the most successful hit of Welks career, was the only polka song ever to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Along with “Calcutta!” Manthei will illustrate his presentation with performances of other Welk pop standards such as “Baby Elephant Walk.” Admission donation is $5 per person at the door. Proceeds benefit the operations of the Little White School Museum. The program series continues on Thursday evening, Oct. 9, when the popular Oswego Cemetery Walk begins at 7 p.m. Participants in this free event will have the chance to meet the “ghosts” of early Oswego pioneers and other residents at the Oswego Township Cemetery on South Main Street. Come any time between 7 and 9 p.m.; tours leave every 15 minutes. Expect mild walking conditions. No registration is necessary. The annual cemetery walk is co-sponsored by the Oswego Public Library District and the Oswegoland Heritage Association. For more information, call 630-554-3850. Rain date is Friday, Oct. 10. For more information on this year’s Little White School Museum Program Series, call the museum at 630-554-2999, send an email to info@littlewhiteschoolmuseum, or check the Oswegoland Park District’s fall catalog.
