Cybersecurity Among Top Energy Industry Concerns U.S. News & World Report (08/12/14) Neuhauser, Alan Cybersecurity is now the fourth-highest concern for electric utilities, up from sixth a year ago, according to a report from the consulting, construction and engineering firm Black & Veatch. Thirty-two percent of electric utilities surveyed for the report, 2014 Strategic Directions: U.S. Electric Industry, had integrated security systems with the proper segmentation, monitoring and redundancies needed for cyberthreat protection. However, 48 percent of respondents do not have such systems. Moreover, fewer than a third of electric utilities said they were prepared to meet the growing threat of an attack. The growing concern about cyberattacks comes in response to headline-grabbing cyber incidents and stricter cybersecurity standards from federal regulators. The industry is paying attention and actively seeking ways to bolster security practices to limit power system vulnerability, says the annual report.
