Cycle Rally 2013 on the Mangalorean Increase in percentage over the base year 1998 Total Vehicles on road under RTO, Mangalore jurisdiction has increased 3.5 times in last 15 years. (From 1,06,756 in 1998 to 3,70,725 in September 2012) No. of cars on road have gone up 4.5 times (20,679 in the year 1998 to 93,205 in September 2012) No. of two wheelers have increased nearly 4 times (62,934 in 1998 to 2,32,464 in September 2012) Contrary to this, public transports like buses and rickshaws have shown increase of about 21/2 times in last 15 years. The last 5 years data is an eye opener. While the number of Rickshaw on road has increased by 27% and number of buses increased by 13%, the rise in number of cars and two wheelers shows an astonishing figure of 85% and 46% respectively in the last 5 years. This clearly indicates that between March 2008 and September 2012, Mangaloreans are showing an increasing trend towards commuting by cars and two wheelers, rather than using public transport. Just 13% increase in public transport over last 5 years strengthens this observation. Currently about 100 vehicles, mostly two wheelers and cars get registered in Mangalore RTO on every working day. While every kid on cycle dreams of owning a bike some day, every bike rider dreams of owning a car. The future of our road traffic looks totally congested! So is the future of our spending on fuel and impact of resultant carbon foot prints on the environment. Cycling short distances may help in reducing such impact.
