Cycling along the new Te Awa The Great NZ River Ride, one sees new-ish expensive mansions all along the opposite eastern bank, for the entire distance from Hamilton to Horotiu. They in turn, looking west, have a view over the river and past the cycle track of, from south to north, the sewage works, the dairy factory, the sand quarry and, in the distance, the abattoir. The progress of these flash places up River Rd on the eastern bank is blocked by the closed gas-flaring rubbish dump and then the battery chicken farms that stretch almost to Turangawaewae in Ngaruawahia. I dont get why such up-market habitation has arisen in such a place, can the well-heeled residents not see, or smell???
