Cynon Valley Cup lights up Communities With the football season ready to kick off, Game ON launched its own inaugural Cynon Valley Community Cup to promote the development of a league programme in the area.The Game ON programme and partners Vi-ability have teamed together to develop opportunities for young people aged 16-24 to gain employment and skills through the Jobs Growth Wales Programme. Kris Hames, a Welsh Premier League referee come on board to develop the Game ON programme in his own community of the Upper Cynon Valley. Kris has been tasked with developing and supporting existing activities in the area through Communities First and the Youth Provision. Already, Kris has been able to establish positive links with key members of staff and has been an instant hit with the young people, promoting ways of increasing physical activity and community cohesion in the cluster. The Cynon Valley Community Cup hosted twelve teams and with over ninety lads competing, it was a show to remember as the young people engaged with the programme and are relishing the opportunity of a new league programme. On the night there were some stand out performers with both Hirwaun YMCA and Penywaun dominating the Group A proceedings from the off. After hard fought battles with Llwydcoed “A” and Abercwmboi, both teams faced up for a place in the final. With Penywaun nicking a dramatic 1-0 win. In Group B, the contest was equally as tense, with Cwmbach and Penywaun “B” both chasing the unbeaten Blaengwawr all the way, however, two victories for latter secured their final place.In a tense finale, Blaengwawr came out on top with two well worked goals to secure the Cup and will be eager to retain their title at the next event in the coming weeks.
