D-DAY 70 YEARS I remember going to see Saving Private Ryan at - TopicsExpress

D-DAY 70 YEARS I remember going to see Saving Private Ryan at the old southern cinemas in Chapmanville, WV. The first 20 minutes or so of that movie are an amazingly detailed and horrific depiction of the US forces invading Omaha Beach. The images of that scene were so vivid and gripped me in such a way, I had to get up and go to the lobby for just a second to absorb the realness of one of the most somber, yet important days in American(and world) history. I know its just a movie, but I couldnt keep from thinking of all the men who had to endure the hell of that day and especially the ones who watched their last sunrise in the waters off the coast of France. From time to time in the years following that movie, and even to this day, Ive went to youtube and pulled up this scene to show it to my children so they too might realize the significance of the sacrifices made by the remarkable people who were the Greatest Generation. I hope in some form or fashion, you will teach your children to respect, appreciate, and honor the reasons we are free and the hardships endured by those who came before us so our lives may be better. At the end of the movie, James Ryan(an old man then) goes with his family to visit the grave of one of the men who died during his rescue so many years before. He kneels to the grave and says, They wanted to come with me. To be honest with you, I wasnt sure how Id feel coming back here. Every day I think about what you said to me that day on the bridge. I tried to live my life the best that I could. I hope that was enough. I hope that, at least in your eyes, Ive earned what all of you have done for me. He then turns to his wife and with tears in his eyes and says, Tell me Ive lived a good life and Tell me Im a good man. There are fewer and fewer of these heroes left with each passing day, so we should all make it a point to honor them every chance we get and thank them for the life they lived and the men they were at a time when most of us werent around yet. Never let their sacrifices or stories be forgotten. May we all earn what THEY have done for US. Greatest Generation, I salute you! Semper Fi
