DAILY DEVOTION FOR TODAY JULY 07TH> CAPTIVES OF SIN The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed. LUKE 4:18 Imagine what it must be like to accidentally get locked in your own bedroom. At first, you probably would not even realize it. After all, the room would be the same; there would be no reason for you to think there was a problem. Your furniture would be there, neatly arranged. Your bed would still beckon you with the hope of peaceful slumber. Your window would still offer the pleasant view that you see every day. There would really be nothing out of the ordinary. Then, say you wanted to make a sandwich. You click the television off, climb out of bed, and head for the door. Reaching for the knob, you are immediately struck with the realization that your door lock has broken, and the door will not open. You pull and jerk on the knob, but the door does not move. You yell for help, but no one is home. You are trapped; and the worst part is, you never even realized you were a prisoner. This scene is a bit of a parody, but it aptly represents a biblical truth: all people, whether they realize it or not, are captives of sin. Everyone is locked in his own private prison. The good news, however, is that Jesus came into the world to release the prisoners. That is, He came to free the entire world from the grip of sin. Thank Him today for the glorious freedom offered by the Cross of Christ. He paid the fine, He bore the punishment, and He has set you free!!
