DAILY GOSPEL AND REFLECTION, SEPT. 24, 2014 ( WEDNESDAY ) The Mission of the Twelve Lk 9:1-6 1[Jesus] summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2and he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal [the sick]. 3He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic. 4Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there. 5And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.” 6Then they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the good news and curing diseases everywhere. REFLECTION Take nothing for the journey. Jesus makes it clear that the power and authority given to the Twelve are to be exercised on the condition of absolute detachment (cf Lk 14:33) that leads to complete reliance on God (cf Lk 12:22-31). Jesus knows very well that the commissioning to proclaim the kingdom, exorcise demons, and heal the sick bestows enormous powers that the Twelve may be tempted to play with. In fact, James and John, the “sons of thunder,” will ask the Lord to rain down fire from heaven to punish a hostile Samaritan village (cf Lk 9:54). Traveling light does not only facilitate efficiency and fluidity in missionary activity, but it is an effective countermeasure to lose focus and fall into the irresistible temptation of arrogating to oneself the “successes” along the way. When one is unencumbered by worldly cares, every magnificent work that one does is always for the greater glory of God. One always aims for the treasures in heaven, and so one’s heart is accurately on target. One remains humble and directs all attention to God. Ministers, preachers, and healers easily fall into the trap of self-promotion and self-aggrandizement. Indeed, prosperity and the adulation of the people are intoxicating. Taking nothing for the journey keeps our motivation in check, makes us stick to the game plan, and builds our confidence that God will provide for all our needs. What are the gifts that the Spirit has empowered you with? Are you exercising them appropriately?
