DAP appoints auditors to avoid repeat of counting fiasco: KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 — The DAP has appointed an audit firm to oversee its party election on September 29 to prevent a repeat of the tallying error that led the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to order it to hold fresh polls in place of last year’s voting. “We are confident this step will give an assurance to not repeat the mistake again,” party Whip Anthony Loke Siew Fook said in a news conference here today. But Loke refused to name the audit firm until the Party’s Special Congress that will be held at One World Hotel in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya. “We don’t want them to face any political pressure,” he said. Loke, who is also the special congress steering committee chairman, said notice of the re-election will be delivered today to the RoS, and mailed to all 3,561 party delegates eligible to vote. “But if they receive it or not is not our responsibility,” the lawmaker said. “That is the responsibility of POS Malaysia to make sure the letter is being delivered,” he added referring to Malaysia’s postal services company. Loke said they have done their part by mailing out the notices to the registered address of the delegates in their system. “But if the delegate does not live there anymore, we can’t guarantee.” The party announced last month that they will reuse the same list of candidates who had run for office on December 15 last year. Five out of 68 candidates in the original list have withdrawn: Choong Siew Onn, Er Teck Hwa, Jaya Balan Valliappan, Teo Kok Seong, and Violet Yong Wui Wui. “If anyone votes for any of the withdrawn candidate’s number, the vote will still be counted,” Loke said. On January 4, it was revealed that an internal audit showed errors in the tabulation of votes from the December 15, 2012 party elections that he said were caused by a technical glitch when the results were transferred to a computer using the Microsoft Excel programme. The amendments resulted in Lim’s political secretary, Zairil Khir Johari, moving up from 39th position to 20th ― the last elected position in the party’s CEC. Following complaints by some members, the RoS began investigations and subsequently ordered the party to redo its elections after saying it was not satisfied with the explanation given. After prolonged public wrangling the Registrar, the party last month finally gave up its fight and agreed to hold the fresh election as directed. dlvr.it/3vzJpS
