DAR Implements Greening Program In North Cotabato Agrarian Reform Communities The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) with the local government unit of Midsayap in North Cotabato recently planted 1,200 Mahogany seedlings in agrarian reform communities (ARCs) of Tumbras, Rajah Buayan, Tugal, Nabalawag, Kapinpilan, and Sambulawan in support of the government’s National Greening Program. The National Greening Program is a government’s initiative to plant around 1.5-billion trees covering about 1.5-million hectares nationwide to promote resource conservation and protection, productivity enhancement, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and poverty reduction. Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer II Marion Abella said the tree growing program aims to mitigate the effects of climate change which greatly affects the livelihood of our agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs). “We are hopeful that this program will also strengthen the cooperation and camaraderie of Muslim and Christian ARBs to attain peace and development in their respective communities,” Abella said. Abella added that the DAR encourages other ARBs to sustain the program because in the coming years the trees will grow to boost the natural resources in their areas. ARBs who participated in the tree growing program were given the privilege to name a tree after their name, thus, the greening areas have trees called Francisco Basadre tree, Farida Taha tree, Peng Kulilong tree, Alimudin Mulod tree, Abdul Kadir tree, Ester Lanzarote tree, and the like. Municipal Agrarian Reform Program Officer Felerma Gimenez said the ARBs were inspired with the concept of naming the trees after them because it gave them the sense of pride and responsibility on the trees they have planted. “We are hoping that the collective efforts of ARBs planting tree will also be radiated to other ARCs in the province in the next months to come,” Gimenez said.
