DARKNESS The bloody fool lies on his side, a ‘dead’ man, an empty medicine bottle beside him, both seems to be headed for the gutter. You open your eyes and see a world of total darkness, not a star in the sky. Is this the world of the dead? You see a sky with no stars, you wonder, so the skies of heaven are all clouded. But isn’t heaven a land of resplendent sunshine, a land of fanfare, sweet sweet wine flowing as if like a river? Where are the virgins? Where are all the angels, singing and dancing, welcoming you to the land of eternal youth, an unending supply of all the food that makes one salivate and then satiated to the fullest? What kind of morass is this, the miasma blinding, stinky? Is this hell then? Where are the fires, the hooved feet, the horns? You feel a bit chilly in fact. Fat drops of rain drop on you. It rains in heaven? Uff............that putrid smell. You feel something rough running up and down your face; it’s a dog licking your face. A dog in heaven! No sun, no light, but a heaven where dogs lick your face with fat drops of rain burn your cheeks! Is it the purgatory? You wonder whether you have been living in a purgatory all your life. A life in purgatory seems plausible; a penniless life, depending on someone else for even the dirty stinky shirt on your back. So god has not decided how and when to send to everlasting damnation. You find no reason for this descent into hell. You hear someone ask whether you have money to go past the Pearly gates; you feel delusional, looking at a chimera. No one goes to heaven without money you damn fool! You drift off to sleep in an unbearable state of confusion but a beat cop pokes you with his night stick and makes you sit up, the dog stops licking. He takes you for a dirty stinky despicable drunk and lands a few on you with his stick. You protest your innocence, but who gives a shit if you don’t have a penny in your pocket? Dhaka 22nd July 2014
