DAY #16 – ARE IMAGES IDOLATROUS? It’s common to see images of Jesus as a baby during this time but are they idols? Byzantine Emperor Leo III thought so. In the 4th century AD he ordered the elimination of revered images or sculptures of Jesus, Mary, angels, and saints. The reasoning was that they violated the second commandment. Do they? Well, if the second commandment condemns images of anything at all, GOD would have been guilty of a contradiction because He commanded the Israelites to decorate the Ark of the Covenant and the Temple with cherubim (Exodus 25: 18-20), etc. However, idolatry lies not in the *making* of images, but in the *worship* of man-made images (Exodus 20: 5) in place of the “image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1: 15). This Christmas season, may the images of Jesus, Mary, and the angels praising GOD on high remind us to worship the only incarnate GOD saying, “Glory to GOD in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests.” (Luke 2: 14). **To “share”, copy and paste this text and enjoy this song selection --
