DAY #2: THE BENEFITS OF WISDOM “Cry out for insight and understanding. Search for them as you would for lost money or hidden treasure. Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He grants a treasure of good sense to the godly. He is their shield, protecting those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of justice and protects those who are faithful to him.” (Prov. 2:3-8). Ours is an instant society. What we want, we want it right now, with no waiting, thank you very much! People get upset if they have to wait longer than two minutes for their cheeseburger in the drive-thru at McDonalds. Unfortunately, this kind of a mentality doesn’t work well when it comes to seeking wisdom. A story is told of a student who went to the philosopher Socrates one day, seeking wisdom. The master took the student to the lakeshore and walked into the water. The student followed his instructor deeper and deeper into the water. Without saying a word, Socrates grabbed the boy by the back of his neck, pushed his head under the water and held it there. Finally, Socrates let him go. The pupil gasped for air, choked on water, and shouted, “What did you do that for?” Socrates responded: “When you want wisdom as badly as you wanted that last breath, it is then that you shall have it.” It takes work to get wisdom! But - if you’re willing to put in the time to find it, there are many benefits and blessings to getting wisdom. The above Scripture tells us that God is the one who gives wisdom, knowledge and understanding, so if we want to find wisdom, we must start with God. He has given us the promise: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5). It’s interesting that the context of this Scripture is when you find yourself in the midst of storms and trials. When life gets difficult, and the road is rough, it’s good to know that we have a Guide who can point the way for us. So what are some of the benefits of wisdom? Chapter two tells us: v. 9) - wisdom will help you understand what is right, just and fair and it will help you to know the right course of action every time v. 10) - wisdom and knowledge will fill you with joy v. 11) - wisdom and understanding will watch over you and keep you safe v. 12) - wisdom will save you from evil people If you want to be wise, start by asking God for it, then open up the Book of Wisdom - the Bible - and search for it like you would hidden treasure!
