DAY 277 – BE STEADFAST! ------------------------------ “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the LORD, knowing that your labour is not in vain in the LORD.” – 1 Corinthians 15:58 We are to be steadfast in the teachings of the gospel. Know what you know, and knowing it, cling to it. Hold fast to the form of sound teaching. Don’t be like others, who have a doubtful mind – who know nothing, and even go as far as saying that nothing can be known. The highest wisdom of such people is to suspect the truth of everything they once knew, and to be in doubt as to whether there are any basics at all. According to the ways of the world, faith is just a matter of opinion. No opinion is so important that it is worth fighting for. The martyrs of the gospel might have saved themselves many losses and pain if they had the understanding of the world, in so far as faith is concerned. I detest the way the world defines faith. This misleading spirit will continue to eat those in the world just as does the canker worm. Where is our strength when our faith is held in such low esteem? Where is the conscience? Where is the love for the truth? Soon, there will be no common honesty. In these days, for most people, black is white and white is black – and all things are whichever color may happen to be in your own eyes, the color being nowhere but in your eyes. Theology is just a set of opinions, a bundle of views and persuasions. The Bible, to these people of good social position, is just a nose of wax which everybody may shape into whatever form he desires. Friends, let us beware of falling into this state of mind, because if you do so, I can assure you that you are not and have never been a believer at all – for the Spirit which dwells in us, believers, hates lies and falsehood, and clings firmly to the truth. Our LORD and Master, Jesus Christ never hesitated when he spoke the truth. He never left it to individuals to make what they will with what he said. He sealed his Word with, “heaven and earth shall pass away, but my word shall abide forever,” – and, “He that believes shall be saved, but he that does not believe shall be condemned.” These are most hated statements in the world, yet the LORD spoke them, and they are as infallible as the person who spoke them. The LORD Jesus never taught that it was not dangerous to man’s nature to believe a lie. Friends, be firm, be steadfast, be positive. There are certain things which are true – find them out, search for them, struggle with them, wrestle with them as with hooks of steel. Buy the truth at any price and do not sell it at any price. Be steadfast in the sense of not being changeable. Some people have one belief system today and another one tomorrow, one faith today and another faith tomorrow. There are crowds of people today, who are ever learning but never coming to the knowledge of the truth. Their teachings are shifting as sandbanks and are full of danger. But you, having learned the truth – hold on to it, grow into it and let the roots of your soul penetrate into its centre and drink up nourishment which lies in it. Do not be for ever transplanting yourself from soil to soil. How can a tree grow when repeatedly shifted? Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Faith is not a series of guesses at the truth, but “we speak what we know, and testify what we have seen.” That which you have clearly seen to be the word of God, that which the Holy Spirit bears witness to in your conscience – hold on to that with iron grasp. The holding of the truth is essential to our life and to our eternal life. The Holy Spirit has given his unction to the believers, and they know the truth, and more than that they know that no lie is of the truth. If it was not for this anointing, the very elect of God would have been deceived in this age of falsehood and deception. Brethren, be steadfast! There are still tough times ahead. Be steadfast!
