DAY 5. AUTISM AWARENESS POST Dawson hasnt ever had any interest in playing sport. He is quite uncoordinated and his gross motor skills are significantly delayed compared to his peers. About 18 months ago we decided to give horse riding a go as we had heard this can be a positive experience for kids on the Autism spectrum. He doesnt like animals who are unpredictable so I wasnt sure how he would go. I told his instructor that I was ok if he didnt even get on the horse for his first lesson but just got to know his horse and find out what is expected of him. Well amazingly not only did he get on the horse but by the end of the lesson he was trotting!! It seems that Dawson is a bit of a natural at horse riding and he finds the experience very calming. As Aiden has a physical disability and a vision impairment we havent looked at an outdoor activity other than swimming so far. However I have heard that horse riding is also great for kids with Cerebral Palsy so it is my plan to try it with Aiden as well. Today he went along and watched his big brother at horse riding. Its on a rural property and has a variety of animals walking around. Today Aiden said the words horse, sheep, cat and dog for the first time.
