DAY 5 any DAY 6: Road Trip - It is What it is The Tourist and Statistics We consciously avoided national roads and preferred the roads less traveled in order to explore and discover. Unfortunately we could not avoid the N2 from George to Swellendam but it brought about an interesting discovery at a rest stop about 20 km from Riversdale. We shared the rest stop with a lone traffic officer from the Hesseqau District Municipality. He was casually sitting at a table playing with his cellphone with an unmarked panel van parked in the shade nearby. About 30 meters away, close to the road, next to a barrier was a contraception set on a short pole about half meter high and the size of a small shoe box attached to two black boxes, the size of a handbag - an unmanned laser camera pointed in one direction. Ever so often it emitted a beep when vehicles driving in both directions, past it. We decided to have a chat with Mr Traffic Officer. He informed us that its been a very busy camera of late in that 100 km/h zone. On Xmas eve they captured 1280 offenders in a continuous eight hour period. Danté very quickly converted it to one car being captured, on average, every 40 seconds . Mr Traffic Officer indicated that that the camera is set at 112 km/h - meaning a 12 km/h tolerance. Mr Traffic Officer told us that he dont think people will ever listen about driving within a speed limit. In the time we had a chat - about 10 minutes - the camera captured 18 offenders. Danté was very impressed with Mr Traffic Officer and the information that he imparted - valuable lesson about road safety for an impressionable young mind. From explorers to tourist is what we became on the Whale Coast route through Bredarsdorp to Cape Agulhas via Struisbaai enroute to a campsite in Hawston and stopping inbetween at Die Dam. Pearly Beach, Gansbaai and Hermanus. We covered 1 934 km in 115 hours of which 30 hours driving time. We stopped in 21 towns and slept in five of them. All in all it was an absolutely awesome way to spend quality time with each other and a great way to have a holiday. We achieved what we set out to do and much more. We will let you know soon WHY we did this road trip. THANK YOU for keeping us company. THANK YOU for the prayers
