DAY 75, Tuesday July 9. Left Gettysburg about 9:00. Gas is alot cheaper out of Connecticut. Stopped in Chambersburg, PA to tour the last house that John Brown lived in. Almost a private tour. It was a boarding house, and a more normal sized place, compared to the large mansions and estates that we had been through recently. Next was Buchanan State Park to see his birthplace; only a rock-pile monument. Appropriate, being that he is fighting for last place on the list of effective or significant Presidents. Then to Allaghany Portaga National Historical Monument - quite the engineering marvel for 1834. They lifted loaded canal barges over the mtns by flatbed railroad cars in 10 steps with fixed in place engines. Last stop was Johnstown Flood NHS. Again quite impressive, the impact of that disaster.
