DAY FIVE - FORCED PERSPECTIVE Forced perspective is one of the best quick tricks to add some fun to photography. You can literally do it anywhere, with almost anything. Forced Perspective just means that you exploit the medium of photography to cause the viewer to see something other than what is reality. Most often you see this technique at popular tourist buildings like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, where people often pose holding it up, using the fact that they, as the secondary subject, are closer to the camera, which means that the relative size between the tower, and the person changes and becomes such that the person appears to hold up the tower. Other popular subjects include: holding the sun or moon, grasping mountains, falling from the floor (due to rotating the angle of the photograph so that the floor becomes a wall), flying (due to jumping) over landscapes, or stepping on large objects like mountains or buildings. Forced perspective can seem like a one-trick pony, but with creativity and imagination the uses are actually almost endless. Take a look at the resources links for a couple lists of amazing forced perspective photos. Forced Perspective works best when your aperture is as small as possible with you still being able to expose properly. This will cause everything in the photo to be in focus (getting rid of as much depth of field as possible) to best highlight the forced perspective. This means the aperture f/# should be a larger number (f/10, f/14, f/22, etc). You will have to manipulate your shutter speed, and likely your iso as well to be able to shoot a proper exposure. Using a tripod can help, especially if you are having trouble lining up your perspective shot. (remember, in a pinch use tables, curbs, fences, etc to steady your shot. I hate carrying a tripod, so I like to find a wall or pole and press my camera against it as hard as I can (without breaking) to steady it. aka the poor mans monopod hehe!) Good luck, and have fun!! (and if I had used a higher aperture (smaller hole) it would have been better. As it was, I had to take this very quickly on my way out the door. sorry guys!)
