DAY NINETEEN TAIWAN, EAST ASIA Ancestor worship is very important in Taiwan, particularly among the working class. According to OMF, “Children are told by their parents not to become Christians because then ‘you will not be able to worship me after I am dead, and I will become a hungry ghost.’” The Taiwanese believe that people turn into ghosts when they die, either happy ghosts or hungry ghosts. OMF reports, “Happy ghosts are those who are ‘fed’ or worshipped with offerings of incense, food, and ‘spirit money.’ Hungry ghosts are those who are not worshipped. Hungry ghosts bring havoc upon an individual or family in the form of sickness, family relationship trouble, or financial loss.” Thus, ancestor worship guarantees that deceased loved ones will not cause torment in the future. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth about ancestor worship to the Taiwanese people. Pray for Taiwanese Believers to shine the Light of Jesus Christ into Taiwan’s dark, occult world. Pray for many Taiwanese to turn from false religion to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ (The Bible, John 8:12). BAHRAIN, ARABIAN PENINSULA At the height of the Arab Spring uprising in Bahrain in 2011, the Bahraini government destroyed at least 30 Shia Islamic sites. Shia Muslims make up the majority of the population but face persecution from the Sunni government. They are requesting that key historical Shia mosques be rebuilt, such as the 400-year-old Barbagi Mosque. Pray for the Good News of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ to be preached to both the Shia and Sunni Muslims in Bahrain. Pray that as the Shia feel persecution from their Sunni Muslim brothers, they would be led away from Islam and receive Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord (The Bible, Matthew 11:29-31).
