DAY OBUH STORMED ABUJA BY PATRICK OGBOGU (08063272738) Sir Tony Chuks Obuh is a reputable technocrat and political figure in Delta State. He served various governments meritoriously for thirty two years and retired voluntarily as a permanent secretary owing to his passion and ability to serve the people as their chief servant and state governor. After a thanksgiving service to God for a successful retirement at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Agbor, Obuh declared his intention to succeed Uduaghan in 2015 at the LGA PDP Secretariat, Agbor. He went round the twenty five local government areas of Delta State with members of his campaign organisation consulting political leaders and seeking for the people’s mandate. In keeping with the party’s guideline, he stormed the party’s national secretariat at Wadata Plaza, Wuse-Abuja Friday, October 17, 2014 to pick his nomination form amidst pomp and pageantry, which put payed to speculations whether he would contest the party primaries or not. Hitherto, it was the belief in some quarters that politics was the exclusive preserve of politician and not retired civil servants. But thank God, retired civil servants have now come out of their cocoon to take active part in partisan politics and to vie for elective positions with politicians, after all man is a political animal. Obuh’s visit to Abuja with his team of political heavy weights was remarkable. The city itself, is the administrative Capital of Nigeria and a place of aesthetic beauty associated with monuments that can captivate the eyes of a visitor, well planned; comprises of five districts and several surrounding towns and villages and one of the six local government areas that make up the Federal Capital Territory FCT. Apart from the general network of roads in Abuja, Asokoro district is home to the Presidential Villa, National Assembly Complex and the Supreme Court building, while Garki, Wuse and Central business district are home to both government agencies, business and political organisations including the Wadata Plaza which houses the PDP National Secretariat, strategically located at Wuse. The atmosphere at the towering Wadata Plaza of the party secretariat was a beehive of political activities as politicians converge to either meet with the chairman or other party officials. The arrival of Sir Tony Obuh and his team of political giants were given a tumultuous welcome as Obuh exchanged greetings with the party officials who led them into the secretariat for the business of the day. High point of the visit was the handing over of the expression of interest and nomination form to Obuh by the National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu represented by the National Organizing Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha to the joy of the audience. Speaking, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu said retired civil servants in Nigeria are more experienced to handle elective office than their peers in politics, adding that the party was not against retired civil servants contesting elective office, saying they are more qualified because of the wealth of experience they had gathered as career civil servants. While pointing out that Obuh’s experience as a retired permanent secretary had qualified him to contest for the office of the state governor, the PDP chieftain who was represented by Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha gave assurance that the party would provide a level playing ground for all aspirants to test their popularity. Responding, Sir Obuh commended Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu and other National Officers for their exemplary leadership role in repositioning the party, disclosing that his nomination form was an attestation of his decision to serve Deltans as governor, God willingly. “My nomination form is to assure all Deltans that what they may have been hearing, seeing and reading about Tony Obuh in the area of politics is real as I am on course to succeed Dr. Uduaghan by next year”. He debunked the speculation that he was being sponsored to take over from Uduaghan, saying his primary aim of veering into politics is to use his wealth of experience as a retired permanent secretary to meet to the needs and yearnings of Deltans by upon the current programme of Delta Beyond Oil initiative of the state government. He called on Deltans to give him the needed support to enable him actualize his dreams. Obuh who is a native of Agbor Oki in Ika South LGA is a Christian and happily married to Mrs. Esther Obuh, an Accountant and blessed with four children.
