DEAD SEA. Visitors smear themselves with Dead Sea mud reputed to be rich in beautifying minerals. One thing to keep in mind when youre taking a swim there: Never for a moment submerge your face. I did just that and immediately felt excruciating pain in my eyes such that I could no longer open them. I was lucky someone was kind enough to lead me to a shower installed beachside. For sure I know that seawater is brine and salt in the eyes stings but never did I imagine it could be that painful. As they say, curiosity kills a cat. The Dead Sea is not a sea; it is a lake because it is surrounded by land. It forms part of the border between Israel and Jordan. And because it is an enclosed basin, the water never leaves the lake except by evaporation. Its salinity is 33 percent compared to just 3 percent for the Mediterranean 50 miles away. Thats the reason for its buoyancy. You float in the water without really trying. Because it is so salty most living things cant survive, thus its name the Dead Sea.
