DECIPHERING GODS LINGUISTIC CODES And he [Jesus] said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. Luke 8: 10 It is not every time God speaks in a congregation that He is speaking to everybody there; it is not every time God speaks in public that He wants everybody to understand Him. Like every husband or father or friend, He has to have a way of communicating personally with His own even in public, hence the need for a personal language - codes of parables which to the outsiders remain codes but to the insider are a very decipherable language. There are times He wants only His own people to understand what He is saying, even though He may be speaking to them in the midst of others. When God speaks in parables, He hopes that we would understand Him, although to the outsider it remains a dark saying needing interpretation. When we do not, it surprises Him, and He wonders why we are slow in learning. Dont you understand this parable? He may ask, How, then, will you even understand any parable (Mark 4: 13 - Good News)? God does not hope to hide things from us when He seems to be speaking in parables. Even where we do not understand (as sometimes the disciples did not) we could go back to Him, and He will explain to us then privately as He could not have done in the public (Luke 8:9; Mark 4:34). We are supposed to understand what to others may seem only undecipherable parables. The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you ... (Luke 8:10 - Good News Bible). If the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle (1 Corinthians 14:8)? And God is not one to leave us in the dark either (by speaking to us in undecipherable parables) about a battle for which we ought to prepare ourselves. Amen. From The Preacher diary.
