DEFECTION: ATIKU MEETS PDP STAKEHOLDERS IN SOUTH-SOUTH Former vice-president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, was in Benin, Edo State yesterday to commence consultations with his supporters in the South-south zone as a prelude to his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC). “I am in Edo State to consult with my stakeholders in the South-South zone”, he told Comrade Governor Adams Oshiomhole in Government House during a courtesy visit yesterday. He explained that the consultation was a follow-up to the visit of the APC leadership to him in Abuja last December on which occasion the party requested him “to come back home”, adding, “I look forward to doing that “. Alhaji Abubakar who was accompanied by a retinue of aides, commended Governor Oshiomhole for his works and urged him to continue in that direction. The former vice-president declined press interview, but described killings by the Boko Haram in Adamawa, his state, as unfortunate. Responding, Oshiomhole said Atiku has enormous capacity to interact and engage without bitterness, adding that he learnt a lot from him when he was Nigeria Labour Congress [NLC] president. According to the governor, that the former vice-president is consulting shows that he is keeping his words. Comrade Oshiomhole pointed out that in every liberal democracy there are two parties because there are two broad ideas- left and right. He said in Nigeria the forces are not different and are made up of those who want the status quo to remain and those who want change, adding that unless there is a fair balance within the two forces, the expected change will not come. He however warned that in politicking, Nigerians should recognize that it is all about the country and prayed God to guide Atiku to take a decision would be in the best interest of the country.
