DEM LEADERS URGE FAIR DEAL IN FAIRPOINT CONTRACT TALKS AUGUSTA—Top Democratic leaders released the following statements regarding the ongoing labor negotiations between the workers and management of Fairpoint Communications. “This is a challenging situation and one important to the entire state,” said Senate President Justin Alfond of Portland. “There is a lot at stake and I urge both sides to stay at the table negotiating a fair agreement --one that protects these good Maine jobs and also continues to support Maine’s telecommunications infrastructure here in Maine. Our Fairpoint workers are highly skilled and dedicated. It is my hope that agreement on a fair and reasonable contract is reached quickly. “While workers and Fairpoint management continue to negotiate, we urge a fair deal that recognizes the important role our skilled workers play and the need for telecom jobs in our economy,” said House Speaker Mark Eves of North Berwick. “We urge both parties to continue to negotiate in good faith toward a fair deal that works for everyone at the table. A strong and fair economy in our state depends on good jobs like these and the skilled and hard-working employees who do them.” The unions involved in the negotiations include CWA and IBEW represent 2,000 Fairpoint employees, including 750 in Maine.
