DEMOCRATIC AG CANDIDATE OZANNE: SCHIMEL AND REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS NEED TO ADDRESS ‘PAY TO PLAY’ ACCUSATIONS (MADISON) – Last week, Waukesha District Attorney and republican candidate for Wisconsin Attorney General, Brad Schimel, walked out of a Milwaukee television interview when he was asked why he was not going to investigate a fellow republican legislator’s involvement in an alleged ‘pay to play’ scheme. “Schimel and his republican friends need to focus on making our communities safer, not protecting their pay-to-play buddies and stripping voters’ access to democracy,” said Dane County District Attorney, Ismael Ozanne. “I urge DA Schimel to demonstrate leadership and take this allegation seriously. We should expect nothing less of someone running to be the state’s ‘top cop’.” Ozanne said the headline to the WITI-TV Fox 6 report by Mike Lowe perfectly summed up the situation – “Turning a blind eye to political corruption? Waukesha Co. DA Brad Schimel facing accusations”. The case involves state Rep. Joel Kleefisch (R-Oconomowoc) who, in January, found himself being questioned about a closely tailored bill that would have cut child welfare payments for one of his wealthy donors. Kleefisch is husband to Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch. The donor contributed heavily to both Kleefisches and Governor Scott Walker’s campaign. Kleefisch and Schimel have contributed to each other’s campaign. Advocacy group, One Wisconsin Now, has called on Schimel to investigate. Schimel has refused and responded to the group: “Why can’t a legislator press for legislation that benefits a person who has contributed to their campaign? Isn’t that the essence of representative government?” “We have to end this type cozy government for sale arrangement and focus on doing a better job protecting our communities, our families and our environment, ” said Ozanne. ###
