DENG Chenghao, Tom Eight days visit in Spain has gone, but my memories will leave in my mind for a long time. From Barcelona to Valencia, new knowledge, amazing discovery and further understanding of the architecture makes myself a new look. I find myself falling in love with Barcelona, not only because of the amazing buildings designed by Antonio Gaudi and the beautiful girls, but also the great urban planning of this city. In Day3, we came to Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the professor here introduced the urban planning of Barcelona, from which I benefited a lot. Barcelona is located in the northeast of Spain, facing the Mediterranean Sea in the southeast and surrounded by the mountains which forms a semi-circle. Because of the industry booming, the population increased, the city was face with the situation where it needed expansion. On the ground of protecting the old city area, the expansion came to construction and the design of it was called ‘Eixample’. The Eixample is like a grid crossed perpendicularly by long, straight and wide streets, along which the buildings were built to form an octagonal blocks. Maybe you will claim: why are they octagonal, not quadrate? The idea here is to ensure the fluid traffic in all direction. In addition, the open space with open sides to the blocks was able to form the access of sunlight and ventilation; and for different purposes, the open space could be used as gardens, squares or parking areas, etc. The function of the buildings was also can be various: shops, residential even containing some marvelous arts such as Casa Mila and Casa Batllo, which designed by the famous architect, Gaudi. The city planning in Barcelona is exactly a great urban expansion, which broadens my horizon and encourages me to study the architecture and construction further.
