DENMARK PROFILE ~ the Denmark River. The Denmark River is one of the busiest locations in Denmark and rarely sees a quiet day. The river was named in 1829 by Thomas Braidwood Wilson after his mentor, naval surgeon Alexander Denmark, when he discovered it during exploration of the area with local Noongar man, Mokare & John Kent whilst his ship was being repaired in King George Sound. Beginning near Pardelup it weaves its way towards the south over 60kms finding its end at Wilson Inlet. The banks of the river are lush with dense vegetation and plenty of wildlife can be seen popping out of the undergrowth to say hello while you walk along the pathways that are conveniently located along its edges. The paths are perfect for runners, horses, walkers and bikers. Berridge Park is right on its shores, where you can take the family for a nice picnic or barbeque under the trees or have a play in the playground. For the more adventurous you can head down Inlet drive where you will find a charming little gazebo which has welcomed many a family who have no fear of using the rope swing that hangs quietly over the water waiting for someone to take that leap and ‘bommie’ into the river. There are also some stairs where you can launch a kayak from or just wade into the still waters for a swim- maybe even venture under the Heritage Rail Bridge that spans the mouth of the river. Boating and fishing along the Denmark River are welcome and you can spend hours just floating along enjoying the serenity it offers. The town of Denmark holds its famous Markets here, the Australia Day Big Breakfast, ANZAC Breakfasts and many more events and festivals claim the Denmark River shores as their home. During the warmer months you can hire canoes and kayaks from the park and for the photographer in you, the winter month’s offer up spectacular shots of rising fog, bursting banks, and a myriad of colour and treasures hidden under the bridges. Denmark River really has something for everyone and just a short stroll away is the town centre with shopping and food galore if you’d rather just sit back and watch the world go by.
