DENR committee to step-up forest protection efforts NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, July 11 (PIA6) - - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Cadiz City reorganized the Multi-Sectoral Forest Protection Committee in the First District of the province. The reorganized committee aims to have district wide efforts on forest protection among local government units in the First District which include San Carlos, Calatrava, Toboso, Escalante and Don Salvador Benedicto. About 40 stakeholders from the LGUs, Philippine National Police, Philippine Army, Philippine Coast Guard, Bantay Dagat, legislators, non-government organizations and the people’s organizations attended the reorganization meeting. CENRO Edgar Rostata emphasized the need to locally act in the area of jurisdiction despite the presence of the Protected Area Management Bureau “There is a need really to locally address concerns on biodiversity protection and law enforcement especially within the forestal zone in our area,” Rostata said in a release. One of the highlights of the reorganized committee was the adoption of the San Carlos protocol on permitting and law enforcement mechanism that have been started implemented in San Carlos City with the support of the Local Chief Executive. The protocol lays down system in permitting and steps in law enforcement while Collaborative and joint operations have been the key to address traces of illegal activities in the area. The MFPC will meet quarterly and monthly for areas that need immediate concern to be addressed with dispatch. CENRO Cadiz City also revealed that they will be organizing also the same approach in the Second District covering Sagay, Cadiz, and Manapla.
