DENR finalizes proposed Jalaur Watershed WQMA By: Leonard T. Pineda I ILOILO CITY, October 30 (PIA) --- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources- Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB)-6 is finalizing the proposed designation of the Jalaur Watershed Water Quality Management Area (JAW WQMA) here. In a public consultation held recently, DENR-EMB-6 Regional Director Atty. Jonathan P. Bulos said that it is necessary to consult with various stakeholders within the prospective area of the proposed WQMA. “This is to ensure that issues and concerns shall be considered in reviewing and finalizing the proposed designation of the Jalaur Watershed WQMA,” said Bulos. The designation of WQMA is one of the strategies identified to effectively enforce Republic Act No. 9275, or the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004, and improve the water quality of water bodies through focused interventions or actions that are designed to address specific water quality issues of the areas. The proposed Jalaur Watershed WQMA is composed of 21 municipalities in the province and two cities. Bulos said that the Jalaur Watershed WQMA aims to achieve the following objectives and policies: (1) streamline process and procedures in the control of pollution in the WQMA; (2) promote environmental strategies for protection of the WQMA; (3) formulate WQMA program that encompasses all management issues; (4) provide comprehensive program on pollution prevention; (5) promote public information and education to stakeholders, and; (6) encourage all stakeholders to organize, motivate, and educate people in addressing environmental problems in the WQMA. The DENR said that there are already two designated WQMAs in Iloilo province that include the Tigum-Aganan watershed and the Iloilo-Batiano river system. (JCM/LTP/PIA-Iloilo)
