DEQ to host Wyandotte meeting on pet coke Feb. 10, 2014 For More Information: Paul Schleusener, 517-284-6800, [email protected] Brad Wurfel, 517-284-6713, [email protected] The DEQ today announced it will host a March 5 meeting in Wyandotte to discuss petroleum coke with interested residents. Petroleum coke is a solid byproduct generated by petroleum refineries. High in carbon, it is commonly burned as fuel in cement kilns and power plants. The meeting will be held at the Grand Harbor Banquet Event Center, 1 Saint John St. in Wyandotte, from 1-5 p.m. The meeting is designed to share information. DEQ air and water quality specialists will be on-hand to listen to concerns, discuss DEQ’s regulatory role, answer questions and share information gathered from a DEQ lab analysis of petroleum coke completed last year. A formal public hearing on the River Rouge permit application will be held later this year. Pet coke piles along the Detroit River near the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit last year generated controversy with area residents. The company responsible for the piles, Detroit Bulk Storage, is appealing the City of Detroit’s August decision forcing them off the site. At the same time, DBS has applied for a DEQ air permit to store and ship petroleum coke from a site on Great Lakes Street in River Rouge. Storage and handling of petroleum coke in bulk form can be a source of emissions of particulate matter, often referred to as “fugitive dust.” A facility handling bulk solids will typically implement and maintain a “fugitive dust control plan” to reduce fugitive dust emissions. The Michigan DEQ requires a facility handling bulk petroleum coke obtain a Permit to Install that would require an operator to implement and maintain acceptable fugitive dust control strategies. Anyone who needs accommodations for effective participation at this meeting should contact Amie Hartman at 517-284-6793 at least a week in advance to request mobility, visual, hearing or other assistance.
