DG OCT 2 ...to be, or not to be...???...mary Gas debate raises great many questions To The Editor: Shale gas or no shale gas, that is the question – among others. Whether we should have an economy based on an uncertain resource that may be there in enough quantity to make us all rich (and that is an overstatement even to our provincial conscientiousness), hoping the cleaning up afterward will not put us back in deficit and debt while we buy bottled water for our daily needs. Or should we be more inventive and create a cooperative economy based on our personal needs such as food, shelter, furniture, clothes, technologies for making our electricity for free and without oil, varied services to provide our lives with quality. Make our province the first ‘green’province of this country. Produce so much of everything that we can export. Should we cut all our trees, should we fish the last fish, should we dig everything in the ground until it caves in, and all this for the profit of only a few? Then what happens when this is done? Should our people be the labourers of these few or equal partners in cooperative enterprises? Should our educational system serve only the purpose of mass producing serfs for the industries? Should our successful rich, sitting on their fortune, not be more ethically aware that what resources they took from the common wealth, some of those profits should be put back in the local economy? Should our population accept such low grade political candidates and not have a calculated voting choice of ‘none of the above?’ What our province needs is intelligence, vision, audacity, honesty and courage in the face of perilous times. I haven’t seen any lately; I’ve been blinded by too much self-centredness, too evident dynastic shoving and no substance. In the end,‘to be or not to be’is really the question.
