DG SEC, ARUNMA OTEH LEADS CAPITAL MARKET COMMUNITY ON CONDOLENCE VISIT TO FASHOLA …As Governor commends role of capital market in State’s development The Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Ms Arunma Oteh on Friday led a team of the capital market community comprising regulators, trade groups, brokers, corporate trustees and custodians on a condolence visit to Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) over the passage of his father, declaring that under his watch, Lagos has been a shining example of how to leverage the capital market to transform society. Ms Oteh who spoke at the Lagos House, Ikeja said the capital market is proud to be associated with the work that the Governor has been doing in transforming Lagos State and thanked God that the Governor’s late father lived a fulfilled life. According to the Director-General, though she would have wished that Pa Fashola lived longer, the team would take consolation in the fact that he helped to build the Governor into whom he is as a gift from God through his parents to the world, Nigeria and the capital market. Ms Oteh also said the team from the Stock Market despite not having the opportunity of meeting Pa Fashola before his death is taking solace in the fact that his good legacy will continue to be with everyone and prayed that his soul should rest in peace. The Governor in his response, thanked the team from the Stock Exchange for the thoughtfulness of the visit saying it reinforces the many lessons and values that his late father preached about his commitment to humanity as a whole and bridge building. He recalled his late father’s devotion and investment in stocks and how he later grew up to appreciate the usefulness of stocks and how one can capitalize on his investment to help in meeting business and personal expenses. The Governor thanked Ms Oteh and her team for rebuilding investor confidence back in the capital market in spite of the odds explaining that the capital market apart from land represents an avenue for vulnerable members of the society to invest their hard earned money. The Governor expressed the confidence that as the market continues to grow and gain strength, Ms Oteh would not be deterred by some of the sacrifices she has had to make including returning home to lend a hand. “I must commend the team who stood by you and also urge all institutions that would support the stock market to do so in spite of the differences. If we look beyond the personalities and stress the survival of the institution, decision making can be easier”, he said. Governor Fashola also gave a testimony on the role of the capital market in the development of the State. “As a State we have been able to serve our people better by the kind of support we have received by building an economy and building infrastructure that allows enterprise. This is the way we can improve economic width of our country, provide more jobs instead of handouts”. “It is a kind of partnership that we value, we don’t take it for granted and we would do the needful and in the fullness of time, we will be back because already papers are moving and we are signing”, he explained. The Governor was joined by the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Ayo Gbeleyi during the condolence visit while those on the entourage of Ms Oteh included Mr Bolaji Balogun, Mr Emeka Madubuike, Mr Tunde Kamal, Emmanuel Ohawubi, Uju Irukwu and Mr. Albert Okumagba among others.
