DID THE ARABS ALL DESCEND FROM ISHMAEL? We have all grown up living with and believing the age-old assumption that the Arabs are all descendants of Ishmael because biblically Ishmael was son of the bondwoman. The truth is that we inherit oral traditions without taking the pains to verify the authenticity thereof. But I wish to debunk this ancient assumption and to say that it is not true but absolutely false. Factual history, including some famous Arabic legends and traditions, proves that the Arabs preexisted Ishmael and descended rather from Joktan (known in Arabic traditions as “Qahtan”) – Gen. 10:25-30. One of the legends holds that after Abraham on the order of his wife Sarah had thrown out Hagar and her son Ishmael, they stayed by the highway weeping and crying till some of the Arabic merchants passed by and showed kindness to them, picked them along, housed them and went as far as teaching them the Arabic language, later to occupy one of the parcels of the land of Canaan and much later a part of northern Arabia. Somewhere in the Bible the Ishmaelites are even called Midianites, - Gen. 37:27-28, 36. The question is: Abraham was a Hebrew. How could his own son possibly be an Arab? We must reason. Although the Muslims make this claim, this fact of their Ishmaelic descent is said to appear nowhere in any of the chapters and verses of their Qur’an. And yet Christians do not cease to parrot it everywhere, on the street, from their homes and pulpits, etc. One of the facts that most people including the Christians do not know is that the claims and counterclaims in the Islamic Qur’an are directly pitched with a view to deliberately disclaiming the veracity of biblical reports. For instance, according to it Ibrahim’s legitimate wife was Hagar and not Ishmael (Ismail), whereas Ishmael was the seed of promise, not Isaac. Invariably, Sarah was the one thrown out with her “illegitimate son Isaac” (Yitzhak) and not the other way round. Now the fact of it is that any religion, (Christian orthodoxy, Islamic, Buddhist, Voodooist, African, Freemason, Animistic, etc.), that is not in harmony or conformance with God’s saving way in Christ Jesus, who alone is the Way, the Truth, the Life, and the Light of the world, is naught but “the BONDWOMAN RELIGION.” So be wise!
